Poolside deer

I saw 
to my astonishment 
three deer 
standing by the pool 
of a beach house
I stared
and stared
and they stayed
so 
completely
still
almost as if…
then I realised
they're fakes
this place is plagued by deer
they're pests, culled every year
these must be 'scare-deer'
put there to deter
real ones
satisfied, I walked on
not giving them
another thought
until, walking home
I passed the pool again and
I saw
to my astonishment
no deer.
